Ordering a Portrait of your best friend

Step 1. Choose a photograph. Depending on the kind of portrait the reference photo should be well lit and showing details. This allows me to incorporate as many details into the portrait as possible. Full body portraits are possible too.

Step 2. Send in your photo(s) of choice through the contact form on this website. Be sure to mention your preferences and your vision for the portrait such as size, color, etc. If you have a particular date in mind when the portrait should preferably be finished make sure to mention this as well.

Step 3. Once we're clear about the vision and details of the portrait, a non-refundable deposit of 20% is to be made. This can be done either by bank transfer or Paypal. During the creative process I will send regular updates on the progress of the piece. When the portrait is finished the remaining sum is to be completed before receiving your precious portrait.

At the time of contacting me and discussing details a time of delivery will also be set.

If you would like to gift a portrait before a certain date be sure to contact me in time.

Choosing the right photograph

For the most optimal result it's quite important to choose a well lit photograph, as clear and sharp as possible and close up.

Of course we're not all professional photographers, I know how daunting it can be to get that perfect shot of. Though, for the finished result it is important for me to be able to see your beloved pet as they really are. The color of his or her coat and eyes, the expression you would want to remember forever, the composition of the animal, any distinct features.

If the portrait concerns a pet who has passed I will try my utmost to work with any pictures you have of your dear friend.

When in doubt please don't hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to advice you.

Tips!

To get that right shot you might consider:

- Using a favorite toy to get attention

- Sweet words

- Or a delicious treat

- Natural lighting is always better than indoor lighting

- Try to take a picture on your pet's eye level to get a nice
   composition

- Shoot from up close for more personal portraits

- Cropping far away pictures will always result in loss of details

- Don't use flash

- Make sure to capture distinctive features such as fur patterns and
   eye color

- Consider the visibility of a colar, harness, etc. Do you want this in
   your portrait?

As an artist I will always follow my own style, though I try my best to portray your pet's personality and likeness. I trust this is why you've chosen me as your portrait artist.

In making a portrait a great many hours are spent, during this process only the finest materials are used. This ensures the quality of colors and the portrait overall to be maintained. By using acid-free packaging materials and working precise so the portrait arrives at your doorstep in the best condition.

Maintenance of your portrait

After you've correctly framed your portrait, you're all done!

Well, except for choosing the perfect spot for your piece of art.

For the framing of a soft pastel artwork I always recommend going to a professional framer. A specific way of framing is necessary to preserve your soft pastel portrait. A professional framer will use acid-free materials, a passe-partout, etc.
A good framer can be of excellent service to you.

Portraits by JannaKaspara are created with soft pastels. This material is created by combining pigments and gum Arabic. Pigments used for my artworks are of high standard and colorfast. By using acid free paper the soft pastels contain their quality. The structure and composition of soft pastels make them sensitive to light and moisture. I would advice not to put your portrait in direct sunlight. When exposed to sunlight for too long colors might fade.

By choosing the right framer you are assured that your portrait is framed airtight and you won't have to worry about moisture. Personally, I am in favor of using glass as the front of a frame. This means that I do not recommend plexiglass (acrylate), this can work statically on soft pastels.

Regarding fixative, I've yet to find a fixative that doesn't alter the colors of the soft pastels. This is why I don't use a fixative as a final treatment for my portraits.
